About Me
I discovered MBSR by accident. Around 12 years ago, I was at the YMCA and was looking for something to read while using a stationary bike. This, of course, was pre-Covid when gyms offered reading materials. The selections were kind of slim that day but I did find a Time Magazine with a cover that read “The Mindfulness Revolution”. I thought to myself, “OK, well this is better than nothing”.
At the time of this event, my body was slowly breaking down. I had played a sport in college but didn’t think that merited the mess my body had become. Biking was the one thing I could do without too much pain. I had heard about “Mindfulness” but had no idea what it was. The featured article was about a program called MBSR and I read on. What struck me about the article was the simplicity of mindfulness. The article talked about stress reactivity and I thought to myself “is my body breaking down because of stress?” So I went home and found a online guided meditation by MBSR’s founder, Jon Kabat Zinn. That 20 minute meditation changed my life. It inspired me into taking the 8-week course and my meditative journey had begun. As I write to you now, I’m much healthier, and much happier.
Teacher’s Pathway
I had such a profound experience with taking the 8-week course that I decided to explore the MBSR teacher pathway. The MBSR Teacher Training program is rigorously taught and designed to develop competencies as an experiential teacher. It includes understanding the mechanisms and tools of the MBSR program through formal instruction, practicing in peer group settings, and one-to-one mentoring. The MBSR teacher training is widely considered the gold standard for mindfulness instruction.
I recently completed my Level 1, MBSR Teacher Training at the Mindfulness Center at Brown University and the Mindfulness and Health Institute! I’m considered a “qualified” instructor and free to teach the 8-week course under the governing body. I’m thrilled and honored to be part of this amazing program!
